Creating An Insect Hotel

An insect hotel is a great way to attract insects to your garden. It's a simple process of drilling holes of various sizes in one end of an old log, then placing it in a position about half a metre, (50cm) above the ground. The holes should be 3 - 4cm deep and as straight as possible.

Holes of around 3mm to 8mm drilled in the end of an old log.

The image above shows an Australian native Masked Bee, (Hylaeus euxanthus), constructing her nest in one of the holes in the insect hotel. It was quite fascinating to watch through a macro lens.

Although the information on this page is brief, there isn't much to it. So give it a go, you may discover insects and other creatures you've never seen before.
